Open Rank/Open Specialty Clinical Faculty - Associate Dean for Medical Education (Finance)

The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston invites applications for a non-tenure track Open Rank/Open Specialty Clinical Faculty - Associate Dean for Medical Education.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Education, this key leadership role is responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the four-year MD program curriculum, collaborating with deans, chairs, departments, faculty, clinical affiliates and other external stakeholders to ensure the seamless integration of all education components for students, leading initiatives to foster innovative and effective learning experiences, overseeing the office of medical education and its staff, including the college's Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL), ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements, and fostering a positive and effective learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and Oversight:

• Develop, implement, and review the four-year MD program curriculum to ensure alignment with institutional goals, accreditation standards, and best practices in medical education.
• Collaborate with faculty and curriculum committees to implement innovative teaching methods, including learner-centered strategies, simulation-based education, and technology-enhanced learning.
• Provide supervision, mentoring and development opportunities for curricular leaders and faculty responsible for each phase and element of the curriculum.
• Develop and enhance external educational partnerships, including the recruitment and retention of voluntary faculty preceptors and ensuring adequacy of clinical sites and experiences for students.
• Monitor curriculum effectiveness through regular assessment and evaluation, making data-driven improvements as necessary.
• Create, maintain, and amend academic and curricular policies as appropriate.

Clinical Skills Strategy and Management:

• Provide strategic direction and operational oversight for the Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL), including staffing, resource allocation, and facility management.
• Ensure that the clinical skills curriculum integrates with the overall medical education program and supports the development of clinical competency among students.
• Foster a culture of excellence in clinical skills training, promoting professionalism, communication skills, and patient-centered care.

Leadership and Budget Management

• Contribute to the strategic planning of the medical school, particularly in areas related to education, aligning educational goals with the broader mission of the institution.
• Recruit, lead, supervise, and provide ongoing development of staff in the Office of Medical Education
• Lead and coordinate the efforts of curricular leaders, course directors, and faculty in the educational program.
• Prepare and oversee budget for the office of medical education, including oversight of the Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL).
• Oversee utilization of academic spaces, test administration and other academic services for students.

Accreditation and Compliance:

• Collaborate with the office of assessment, quality improvement, and accreditation to ensure compliance with accreditation standards, including Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) requirements.
• Lead efforts to address areas for improvement identified through continuous quality improvement processes and accreditation reviews, working closely with stakeholders including the curriculum committee to implement corrective actions.

Learning environment:

• Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs, faculty, and staff to create and foster a positive and effective learning environment.
• Partner with the office of student affairs and align initiatives to provide comprehensive support services to medical students, including academic advising, career mentoring, and access to academic and clinical experiences to facilitate career readiness.
• Facilitate opportunities for students to explore career pathways, participate in research, and engage in activities that enhance their educational experience.

Salary and rank commensurate with background and experience.

• Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution, with board certification in a clinical specialty preferred.
• Five or more years of experience in medical education leadership, with evidence of success in curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
• Managerial experience, including direct reports, budgeting, and faculty and staff development.
• Experience with achieving accreditation standards and compliance with regulations governing medical education programs.
• Experience with clinical skills training, simulation-based education, and educational technology platforms.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced academic environment.
