Who you are: You thrive in outdoor environments and appreciate the importance of communication and teamwork. You might have previous logging experience or have worked in similar labor-intensive fields such as construction or ranching. Regardless of your background, you are reliable, dedicated, and unafraid to ask questions or seek assistance when needed.
What the job is: The Chokersetter is an intensely physical job that requires significant strength, stamina, and resilience. Be prepared for a work environment that is physically demanding and challenging but rewarding for those who thrive in such conditions. You will work securing felled logs with cable chokers so the equipment (Yarder) can pull them out of the harvest unit to the landing. From there, the logs are processed and sent by log truck to local sawmills. Other duties you will assist with include the setup and placement of the Yarder, which entails stringing lines and splicing. You will need to learn the whistle signals from the Yarder and respond accordingly so logs can be extracted safely from the harvest unit. In this role, it's crucial to have good communication skills and be a team player due to the safety concerns from log movement that occurs throughout the day. The key to being successful in this job is working smart, efficient, and always being aware of your surroundings to ensure your and co-workers' safety.
Work schedule: An example of the schedule, Monday - Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. Usual days off are Saturday and Sunday. During the height of the season (summer months) there will be overtime available during the week and work scheduled on a few Saturdays.
Where you'll work: Logging crews muster at the office in Crannell located in Humboldt County along the northern California coast. The Crannell office is nestled in the forest where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean.
Compensation Details: This is a union job. The hourly rate for this job is $30.73. There is a probationary period per the Union Collective Bargaining Agreement of 60 days for new hires. In addition, the Union offers a generous benefit package to include medical, dental, prescription, vision, life and disability insurance. Paid time off includes 9 designated company holidays and up to 2 personal holidays, 10 vacation days, 5 sick days, 3 days bereavement, an extra 2 days bereavement unpaid, and jury duty.
